Q: Tell us briefly about yourself
A: My name is Alakanani Zikhali, an ENT surgeon from the great city of Francistown. My hobbies include farming (like seriously) and hunting. I’m an outdoors person who appreciates nature and enjoy a very active life style in terms of physical fitness and related activities. I’m married to my amazing wife Dr Elizabeth Botsile, who is a Specialist Physician by profession and we are blessed with 3 children.

Q: Why did you choose to become a medical professional and why did you choose this particular field of speciality?
A: I chose medicine as a field of study as there were no Doctors when I was growing up. Our health system was led by mostly nurses and being a Doctor will help improve our health system In the year 2005, I started specialization with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat). This was my second option;
I initially chose Urology as a my fist option but I was not accepted for it. Overall I must say I’m glad I got my second choice.

Q: Tell us about your study history and your qualifications
A: I started my rotations at Cork University in Ireland as an SHO and progressed to Registrar level. I started my undergraduate medical degree in 1999 and completed it in 2005. I completed my internship in Ireland.

Q: Tell us about your profession
A: I am an Otorhinolaryngologist – this is a big term also called otolaryngology or otolaryngology – head and neck surgery. This is a surgical subspeciality within medicine that deals with the surgical and medical management of conditions in the head and neck. Doctors who specialize in this area are called otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, or ENT surgeons. Patients seek treatment from an otorhinolaryngologist for diseases of the ear, nose, throat, base of the skull, head, and neck which encompasses the surgical management and reconstruction of cancers and benign tumors of the head and neck as well as plastic surgery of the face and neck.

One of my most notable achievements is starting a cochlear implants programme that I offer to patients.

There’s definitely a great need for more specialists ENT field and our country.
